Brian Keeler Endorses Didi Barrett for State Senate at The Albany Project

Brian Keeler of The Albany Project and RebootNY has endorsed Didi Barrett for New York State Senate.

Back in 2006, Brian ran for the same NYS Senate seat in the 41st District which includes a little more than half of Dutchess and all of Columbia County. So he really knows the district and the issues that matter here.

CPA Not Required for County Comptroller.

Board of Supervisors votes to not require comptroller be a CPA.
Only Supervisors Robin Andrews (D-Claverack), Edward Cross (D-Hudson-2), William Hughes Jr (D-Hudson-4) and Kevin McDonald (R-Livingston) voted to maintain the requirement.

During the Roll Call vote on the changes, Claverack Supervisor Andrews said:
"I cannot in good conscience vote to change the law. It makes me so uncomfortable that I have to vote no."

Supervisor Hughes said:
"I’ve been publicly critical of this whole process. This has made me uncomfortable right from the beginning."

At the public hearing before the vote, Lee Jamison, Stuyvesant Democratic Committee Chair said:
"I’m glad that there’s transparency on this issue. I’m a taxpayer. We expect that you’re the stewards of our hard-earned money ... we want to be sure you manage it well.” Jamison recommended that the board not amend the law, and find a CPA, and that the county “get people who have a good track record of watching our cookie jar."

Hudson City Democratic Committee Chairman Victor Mendolia called the re-opening of the hiring process a “do-over” and said:
"I’m hoping at some point there are enough people at the table when things are being discussed so you don’t have to do it over again ... the way this board is being run, I believe, is to the detriment of the county"

Saland Votes Against Absentee Voting Rights

First Molinaro and now Saland takes stand against voting rights.

In February Assemblyman Marcus Molinaro flip-flopped and voted against his own bill which would have eased the amount of information required to vote by absentee ballot in NY State.
The bill passed the Assembly with overwhelming bi-partisan support.
See our previous report.

Now his counterpart in the State Senate, Stephen Saland has also voted against easier access for voters needing to vote by absentee ballot. The bill passed 35-27 mostly along party lines.

After the fiasco of the recent absentee ballot challenges, the people of Columbia County expected to have our elected officials stand with the voters.
Sadly they have both failed to do so.

Common Cause praised the passage of the bill.
Common Cause/NY Applauds State Senate's Bipartisan Passage of Election Reforms
"Common Cause/NY applauds the Senate for passing these long overdue election reforms. They remove unnecessary impediments and inconveniences that make it harder for New Yorkers to be able to vote and help streamline election and campaign procedures. As long-time supporters of no-excuse absentee voting, we are particularly pleased by the passage of S2868B (Addabbo), which simplifies the absentee ballot application process. That bill has already passed the Assembly and we look forward to celebrating its signing into law."

Didi Barrett Announces- She's In

Didi Barrett has officially announced her campaign for State Senate today at a rally at the Columbia County Courthouse in Hudson.

The rally, attended by dozens of supporters was kicked off by an introduction by Supervisor William Hughes Jr. (D-Hudson 4) and by Columbia County Democratic Committee Vice-Chair, Cyndy Hall. There was also an earlier rally in the Southern end of the district in Poughkeepsie.

The 41st Senatorial District race will pit Ms. Barrett against 30 year incumbent Stephen Saland.
With the increasing deterioration of state government, it is more and more obvious that Senator Saland is part of the problem and will clearly, not be part of the solution.

It is time for a fresh voice with new ideas in the State Senate.
